                  Cycling in urban areas is becoming a more demanding challenge to a rider’s ability to stay safe.

                  To provide additional assistance to cyclists to meet this challenge véliSo is developing the world’s first - Advanced Riding Assistance System (ARAS).

                  Designed after the Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) now used in many of the world’s leading car models veliSo’s Mirage ARAS uses similar technology and more to help keep cyclists safe.

                veliSo’s Mirage ARAS is enabled by the following units.
                • Unit 1.0
                • World’s first programmable intelligent brake by wire system with electronic brake levers, electronic control unit and electromechanical calipers for front and rear wheels.
                • Unit 2.0
                • World’s first programmable intelligent electronic tire pressure management system consisting of a micro-air compressor, air lines and air valves and wireless air pressure measurement and control for front and rear wheels.
                • Unit 3.0
                • World’s first programmable intelligent Sensor Array Unit consisting of vision camera, radar sensors, infrared camera and ultrasound sensors to provide road surface and 360 degree sensor capability around the entire bicycle.
                • Unit 4.0
                • World’s first Central Control Unit (CCU) based upon an advanced algorithm and high speed processing unit that will control all of the above units to provide the features mentioned above for the entire véliSo Mirage ARAS.
                  How Does It WORK?
                  véliSo’s Mirage ARAS will detect and identify different objects in a 360 Degree Area of the cycling vehicle and, in addition, the type of oncoming road surfaces to verify its friction co-efficient. Then, it will warn the rider of any change in conditions so that the rider can make the appropriate decision related to improving comfort, traction and, more importantly, in controlling or stopping the bicycle.

                  If the rider does not take the appropriate action after the warning and either control or stop the cycling vehicle, the véliSo Mirage ARAS will gradually take over the control of the electronic braking system and tire pressure management system to provide the right level of comfort, control or stopping power. If there is still no response from the cyclist, the véliSo Mirage ARAS will apply the maximum appropriate level of braking and tire pressure to prevent a lose of control due to low-friction road surfaces or a collision with an object or another vehicle.
                FUTURE FEATURES
                • RIDER TRAINING
                • Additionally, rider training will incorporated into the system. Part of the effectiveness of such a system depends on the ability of the cycling vehicle operators to react quickly. Following a designed training program the véliSo Mirage ARAS can be placed into practice or training mode for use on a closed course.

                  Consider the scenario when a cycling vehicle is stopped at traffic lights and the system detects a possible collision from the rear. In practice mode the véliSo Mirage ARAS can simulate that it detects and impending collision and therefore alerts the rider with the proper warning indicator. The rider can then practice taking evasive action. Different scenarios can be chosen through the CCU or smart phone connected to the véliSo Mirage ARAS. The scenarios can be randomly selected or programmed, such as by a safety course instructor.
                • RECORDABLE VIDEO
                • With vision cameras planned for the front and rear of the cycling vehicle the option of having recordable video is part of our plans for the véliSo Mirage ARAS. This would provide a rider with potential validation in case of an incident or accident from the front or rear of the cycling vehicle.
                • As developments and standards progress for communication between other vehicles and infrastructure the véliSo Mirage ARAS will incorporate the ability to interface with other vehicles and road infrastructure.
                STAGE of Development
                The véliSo Mirage (ARAS) has been under development since 2015 beginning with the brake by wire unit and now with its electronic tire pressure management unit, sensor array unit and central control unit.

                Both the brake by wire unit and electronic tire pressure management unit have passed through the proof of concept stage. The core technology behind the electronic tire pressure management system is licensed from the developer of the patented Adaptrac System. Now the components for the pre-series commercial prototypes for both units are being selected and prepared for assembly and testing.

                The sensor array unit is at the proof of concept stage where the architecture is being designed and sensor units reviewed and selected for further development of the proof of concept system prototype. Once this work is completed in the next few months the next set of sensors will be acquired, configured and integrated into the system.
                  The central control unit (CCU) is at the proof of concept stage with different vendor units being reviewed for selection in use for controlling the entire system. véliSo’s R&D plan is to have a pre-series commercial prototype of the entire system developed in the next 6-9 months.
